The 56th NAACP Image Awards honors comedian Dave Chappelle and the Wayans Family…

Comedian Dave Chapelle received the President’s Award on Saturday at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. Chappelle started by mentioning his god brother Ben Jealous and stated that he asked him “What do you think? What do you think I should should say tonight?” And Ben sent me a whole speech.”

Dave continued by saying, “But tonight man, tonight, I feel invigorated because all my Netfilx checks cleared.” This mustered much laughter from the audience as the listen intently to the honoree. Director Stanley Lathan who produced Sanford and Son, Sesame Street, and a plethora of Chappelle’s Netflix specials, the comic manage to give Lathan a big shout out. For a brief moment, Dave managed to get a serious and said, “We go a lot of work to do, but it feels good to know that we’re not in it alone, that we got each other. And remember, community is everything.”

Chappelle ended the night with this, “My father told me a phrase that got me all the way to where I am today. He said, Whenever you mess up or you feel like you can’t get up. He said, you remember these words because they’re magic words. And I said, What’s the word dad? And he says, whoops, let’s keep it moving. Y’all, let’s keep it moving.”

The NAACP Image Awards inducted the Wayans family in the Hall of Fame Award. Attending the event was Damon, Marlon, Kim, Damon Jr., Craig, Chaunte and Damien Wayans. Both Damon and Marlon credited the family success from their big brother Keenen Ivory Wayans.
