In this adaptation, the story expands beyond its simple roots, giving the “tuna with attitude” more depth, humor, and heart. With vibrant visuals, playful characters, and a message about self acceptance and shifting perspectives, the film aims to capture the charm that made the original story a favorite among kids and parents alike. Offering enough entertainment to keep the whole family engaged.

Based on a children’s book by Deborah Diesen, this animated comedy film is directed by Elise Allen and Elie Choufany between Australia and the United States. The Pout Pout Fish is a simple yet meaningful journey of self discovery, as the main character moves from seeing the world through a gloomy lens to embracing a more positive outlook. The film lens into its themes of identity, kindness, and emotional growth, using light humor and colorful underwater adventures to keep kids engaged. While the storyline remains fairly predictable, it’s elevated by these lovable characters.

So what is ‘The Pout Pout Fish’ about? Mr. Fish (voiced by Nick Offerman) is a grumpy ocean pout. He always has a frown because pouts naturally have downturned mouths which makes him look unhappy. Mr. Fish lives alone and stays isolated from the other fish. When he comes into town, the other fish constantly tells him to cheer up. The more they try to encourage him to smile, the more agitated he gets. Then one day a new neighbor comes Pip (voiced by Nina Oyama) who is a happy high energy leafy sea dragon child. When her home gets destroyed, the two go on a journey to find the Shimmer (voiced by Jordin Sparks) the mythical fish that can grant wishes. If they find her, Shimmer can put Pip’s home back together before her parents come home with her 400 siblings. Meanwhile, there’s another fish in search of Shimmer, Benji (voiced by Remy Hii), who needs to save his family home. Shimmer can only grant one wish so, who will get to her first?

The pacing is quick enough to hold your attention, though some scenes feel slightly repetitive in driving home the message. Still, the movie succeeds in delivering a feel good experience, reminding the audience and children in particular that moods can change when connected with good people.
