The Penguin is a diabolical masterpiece.

How do you conclude a season with a surprising twist? The HBO original season finale was not only a shocking conclusion but also a terrifying revelation about Oswald “Oz” Cobb’s true nature. Every episode, from the beginning to the end, meticulously crafted a comprehensive picture of why and how The Penguin has become a criminal mastermind.

Colin Farrell’s portrayal of The Penguin, in my opinion, is one of his finest cinematic performances. He skillfully creates a character that evokes both admiration and revulsion, making it difficult to determine whether you want the character to succeed or despise him. Farrell’s remarkable transformation throughout the series is truly captivating. As you watch the show, you gradually lose yourself in the character, forgetting that it’s Farrell behind the makeup.

Cristin Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone is one of my favorite characters throughout the series. She not only provided the perfect guidance but also laid the foundation for each episode. Her character’s journey was filled with vulnerability as she grappled with finding a balance between her own needs and her sense of duty. I wholeheartedly supported her until I realized that her true desire was never to run Gotham. She simply wanted to prove a point.

Throughout the series, Rhenzy Feliz’s portrayal of Victor Aguilar certainly tugged at my heartstrings. You wanted him to win, and I did too. His character initially stumbled, but gradually found his footing in each episode, only to have it all cruelly taken away from him in the end. Victor Aguilar embodied many ordinary people who fight to be heard, seen and appreciated. The diabolical and genius writing by Colin Pharrells, as The Penguin, resulted in Victor’s tragic death for “the feeling” of family. It’s a poignant reminder that there can only be one person loved.

Overall, Matt Reeves, Lauren LeFranc, and the other writers did an exceptional job in creating the characters and the world of Gotham. I thoroughly enjoy Matt Reeves’ vision of The Batman and the world he constructs around it. I eagerly anticipate what’s next in the series. Each week, I found myself eagerly waiting for what was to come, and it never failed to disappoint. Additionally, the classic Bat symbol in the sky served as a fitting conclusion to the season.

The Penguin is now streaming on MAX.
