Grammy Award winning recording artist and songwriter Montell Jordan and his wife, Kristin Jordan, are turning a simple bedtime conversation from their own family into a new way to help children face fear. Their new children’s book, Shilo and the Not-So-Scary Girl Above His Bed, flips a familiar childhood fear on its head: What if the monster under the bed is actually afraid of you? Inspired by a real moment with their son, the story introduces readers to Shilo, a young monster who is convinced there is something frightening above his bed—a little girl. As Shilo wrestles with his fear, he learns to pause, pray, remember what is true, and find the courage to take a brave step forward. At its heart, Shilo and the Not-So-Scary Girl Above His Bed gives children an age-appropriate way to understand an important lesson: courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s learning what to do when fear shows up.

While the book introduces Shilo to young readers, the Jordans envision the character and his message reaching far beyond the page—helping children build courage, navigate big feelings, and remember that they don’t have to face frightening moments alone. Created for children ages 3–7, Shilo and the Not-So-Scary Girl Above His Bed is designed to open conversations between children and the trusted adults in their lives about fear, faith, courage, and what it means to be brave. The story can be shared at home, in classrooms, Sunday schools, and other settings where children are learning how to navigate the emotions and uncertainties that are part of growing up.
Shilo and the Not-So-Scary Girl Above His Bed is available for preorder now and will be released nationwide on September 1, 2026, wherever books are sold.
