“Wicked” Review: Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande Defies Oz

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande | Wicked Movie premiere

As Thanksgiving is fast approaching, I’m reminded of the movie classic The Wizard of Oz we so look forward to watching at dinner time with the whole family. So it’s only fitting that new age musical ‘Wicked’ is coming out a week before turkey time. The musical starts off in celebration of the wicked witch is dead. This stems from the life adventure of Dorothy from Kansas through a tornado, she lands in Oz. The 1939 musical film has Dorothy up against the witch, which becomes a major task in order for her to get home. she must kill the witch. It never occurred to anyone about why there was a good witch and a bad witch. Also, why the Wizard of Oz wanted her dead. So this is where “Wicked'” comes in.

Jeff Goldblum plays The Wizard of Oz in “Wicked’

So the story takes a look into the early lives of Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo), who will eventually become the wicked witch of the west and Galinda (played by Ariana Grande) who will change her name to Glinda. They find themselves having to to deal with each others different personalities at the Shiz University. Ms. Erivo seem to embrace this role with ease of being ridicule and made fun of because the color of her skin is green. Really ironic she chose this role but maybe it was familiar territory. Ms. Grande was the one I kept a close eye on. She really did a great job as the self absorbed female.

These two ladies manage to captivate people with their vocal ranges. They were to able to feed off one another and blend their vocals as though they have been singing together for years. The song “Popular” sung by Ariana, really captures Galinda’s whole meaning to life. Cynthia singing “Defying Gravity”, helps you feel the deep spirit of Elphaba. So much so, this young lady sitting next to me was crying as the credits rolled stating how the movie and that song she could relate to.

Overall this movie brought back the old fashion musical we grown to enjoy. Wicked is a great holiday film and definitely a classic. Can’t wait for part 2. But for now we rate this a (4/4) 🍿
