So Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) is a junior high school science teacher but was a former biologist. He is summoned to uncover a cells from the Petrova line. He discovers the organisms that’s growing and is sent back to his old job as a biologist to help save earth from it’s potential destruction. Ryland is chosen to go on this mission with other astronauts but he refuses. Unfortunately he is forced by being given a sedative and wakes up thirteen years later aboard the Hail Mary. Gosling brings both vulnerability and quiet determination to the role, making the character deeply relatable. Fans of sci-fi will appreciate how the story leans both the technical challenges and the human element of survival.
